Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee starred in Gulmohar, which was released in March 2023.

Gulmohar wins Best (Hindi) National Film Award at the 70th National Film Awards in 2024. Released in March 2023, it stars Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee. The jury gave special recognition to Manoj Bajpayee for his performance, even though the movie won Best Film.

A Star Studios production in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Autonomous Works, Gulmohar consists of original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla, and is starring Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth. Fans as well as critics have praised the film highly. The film revolves around a multi-generational family preparing to move out of their 34-year-old family home.

Besides marking Tagore’s return to the screen 13 years after Break Ke Baad, Gulmohar won her wide critical acclaim for its sensitive depiction of a queer matriarch.

Interestingly, Sharmila Tagore won the Best Actor (Female – Jury Choice) award for her role in Gulmohar at the News18 Showsha Reel Awards 2024 in February this year. At the time, she shared her thoughts with us stating, “I don’t quite see it as a comeback or a fresh start. However, portraying Kusum in Gulmohar was an enriching experience. I am grateful to Rahul V Chittella for bringing this concept to life and for working with such a talented cast – Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, Simran, Utsavi Jha, Kaveri Seth, Suraj Sharma and Chandan Roy.”

“Even one year on, there is still so much recall and appreciation of the film,” Tagore added, describing how the film left a lasting impression on the minds of cine lovers. In the end, it is indeed a very special film that crosses all generations and boundaries. The film is not just mine; it was a collaborative effort. Everyone has really enjoyed the queer aspect of it, including my wink at the end.”
