A ministry of external affairs spokesperson called the Canadian deputy high commissioner to address separatist slogans about ‘Khalistan’ at an event where Justin Trudeau was speaking on Monday. In the midst of fervent pro-Khalistan slogans, Justin Trudeau offered reassurance to the Sikh community on Sunday. He affirmed that Canada stands unwaveringly committed to protecting their rights and freedoms.

The ministry of external affairs summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner on Monday over separatist slogans raised at an event that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was addressing personally.

As such disturbing actions were allowed to continue unchecked at the event, the Government of India expressed deep concern and strong protest .As a result, separatism, extremism, and violence have once again gained political space in Canada.

As a consequence of their continued expressions, India-Canada relations are negatively affected as well as violence and criminality are encouraged in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens,” the statement stated.

When Justin Trudeau walked up to address the Sikh community in Toronto on Sunday, he did so amid loud pro-Khalistan chants.

On Khalsa Day, Trudeau praised Canada’s diversity and said, “One of Canada’s greatest strengths is its diversity.” Even as we look at our differences, we should be reminded that Sikh values are

Canadian values on days such as this, as well as every day. We are strong because of our differences, not because of them.”

On Khalsa day, thousands of Sikhs gathered in downtown Toronto for the biggest gathering of the year.

The comments by Trudeau come at a time when India and Canada are experiencing a difficult diplomatic relationship following the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an Indian-designated terrorist.
